Planning for this proposal in the smoky mountains was so exciting and it kept us on our toes! He inquired at the beginning of October about planning to propose to his girlfriend after the holidays. They live in Texas and they were going to Cashiers, NC (close to Asheville) to visit some family. They had hiked a mountain there in the past and that was originally where D wanted to propose since it held significance in their relationship. The original plans changed as you will find out. But, it couldn’t have turned out more perfect.

Planning the proposal

As the date got closer, L caught onto where she thought he was going to propose. Because of that, we changed plans a couple of times to make sure it was the best surprise – including the date! As their photographer, the most important thing I could do was to stay flexible and offer help with finding a new location! It was of the utmost importance to me for their moment to be captured as a complete surprise.

The location was the biggest question for D since that was the one thing he was sure of, so we got on the phone to chat more about plans. He wanted a location that was adventurous and scenic while capturing the surprise on her face. I recommended plenty of locations for him to present to her as a hike they could do while in Gatlinburg. He decided on the waterfall and we stayed flexible with the time of day.

The week of the proposal, the forecast was calling for rain. Tennesee weather can be so unpredictable, so regardless of the forecast, we decided to go for it. I brought along some clear umbrellas just in case. So what ended up happening?

The day of the proposal in the smoky mountains

I started my new year on 1/1/2021 driving an 8-hour road trip to the Great Smoky Mountain National Park at 10 am. Once reaching the trailhead, I began hiking up this mountain to the waterfall. I waited for their arrival while soaking in the sound of the waterfall hitting the rocks and feeling the gentle, cool breeze. Thankfully, the 80% chance of rain was a light mist by the time they began hiking.

D led his lady in front of the waterfall, he vowed his love to her, and he got down on a knee. She said yes! Cheers came from the people standing around and the rain completely held off. It was such a special moment that I know even I will never forget.
