I am a wedding and elopement photographer in Denver, Colorado. My journey did not start in Colorado though! I started my photography business 6 years ago in my hometown. It didn’t take me very long to figure out that couples photography was where I thrived. At the time though, I was pursuing a career in nursing. So while picking up a few photography couples on the side, I pursued my nursing career and became a pediatric trauma nurse at Vanderbilt Children’s Hospital. If you know anything about nursing school, you know it is a grind and you aren’t going to put yourself through those years of schooling just to quit nursing 3 years after graduating. Well, that’s exactly what I did!
I got married to the love of my life, Garret, in April of 2020. Once we got married, I knew I wanted to start my photography career shortly after. I wanted to be able to have a thriving photography business by the time we would be thinking of having children so that I could raise good humans and make my own schedule all while contributing to our finances.
That’s how things got started with my actual photography business! From April to July I poured my heart and soul into starting this business and learning everything I could. As you guys know, when you start your business you aren’t just photographing and editing; you are a full-on entrepreneur. For some reason, that didn’t fully click for me until I was in the thick of it and learning about all this other stuff you have to do to make a thriving photography business.
It got to the point where I would be at my nursing job and I was constantly thinking about photography. Don’t get me wrong, I loved what I was doing as a nurse, caring for my patients and their families and bringing a smile to their faces in such a sensitive time. My passion and my heart were just elsewhere. That’s what made me really realize that this was something I wanted to pursue for me, even more so than back in April when I got married.
By July, I was making more in my photography business than I was as a nurse. I had to decrease my hours at my nursing job because it just didn’t make sense to continue working harder at this job that wasn’t getting me as far. I’m so thankful I did have my nursing job to fall back on. I could pick up some extra hours if I needed to and supplement that way. That was truly such a blessing. Pretty quickly though, I needed to go PRN, which if you don’t know basically means working one or two shifts a month.
Now, I don’t share this brag or to make you feel like you need to put pressure on yourself as a CEO. Everyone’s journey in this photography business is different! I just have so much knowledge to share with you guys that I poured hours, days, weeks into for my business. That is where my heart of service comes in. I took the hard way of trial and error in my business and all this time gathering information. I wanted to create a platform to make all this knowledge I have to share easily digestible and sharable. So that you guys are able to skip some of the longer, harder steps and just fast pass to the good parts. I want you to have the success I have had and am having!
I truly have a passion for teaching. Even in my nursing career, I loved teaching new nurses and getting them acquainted with the unit. Now in my photography business and mentor sessions. Helping photographers in every way I know how! I’m not here to hold back, my friend! I am here to help you succeed and cover ALL ANGLES on this photography podcast.
