How I Became a Sought After Wedding Photographer

If you’ve ever wondered what it actually takes to go from overwhelmed and unsure to becoming a sought after wedding photographer, booked with dream clients who choose you before they even hop on a call, this episode is my most personal one yet.

I’m sharing on my own journey — from pediatric trauma nurse to six-figure wedding photographer in under a year, to the exact shift in my messaging that changed everything, both in my own business and in the businesses of hundreds of photographers I’ve since mentored. If you’re tired of getting ghosted after sending your pricing, tired of feeling invisible even when you’re doing “all the right things,” or you’re just curious how someone builds a sought after photography business without ads, without schmoozing planners, and without burning themselves out — stick around, friend. I’m also sharing something I’m doing live, just once, this year. Listen to the episode below, or keep reading for a summary of what’s covered.

From Pediatric Trauma Nurse to Full-Time Wedding Photographer in 3 Months

Back in 2020, I was a pediatric trauma nurse. My husband and I had just gotten married, and I remember asking him what he thought about me picking up photography on the side — nothing serious, just a little income so that three to five years down the road, whenever we had kids, I could maybe cut back my nursing hours a bit. That was the entire plan. There was no dollar goal, no five-year vision, no grand strategy. Just a hope for a little more flexibility down the road.

I already had a camera I’d picked up in 2018 for my own hiking and travel photos, and once your friends find out you own a DSLR, you become the unofficial photographer for everyone you know. I photographed headshots for a friend’s dating profile, senior photos on a college campus, a “fresh 48” session at the hospital for a friend who’d just given birth, family sessions, you name it. I was charging around $100 a session on a Wix website I’d originally built for my personal blog (which, by the way, I deleted and regret forever — those posts were basically journal entries of everything I was learning in real time).

Somewhere in there, I fell in love with photographing couples, and I started second shooting for fun after meeting a photographer at a styled shoot in 2019. That relationship led to real wedding experience, traveling around Tennessee on weekends while nursing during the week. One of those second-shooting opportunities turned into a moment I didn’t expect — a photographer asked me to essentially run the day and shoot the bride while he shot the groom’s side. That was the moment I realized: I could actually do this on my own.

So in the middle of a pandemic, freshly married, with zero real plan, I started my photography business. And within just three months, I had fully replaced my nursing income and went full-time.

Booking My First Destination Wedding and Crossing Six Figures in Year One

Once I could see my projected income build out for the rest of the year, I knew I was going to cross six figures — and the momentum just kept compounding from there. In July 2020, I booked a $1,000 engagement session. In August 2020, I booked my very first destination wedding — a couple I’d photographed for their Smoky Mountains engagement session who loved working with me so much, they flew me out to Miami for their wedding. That single booking paid more than an entire month of my nursing income.

By September 2020, I had booked eight weddings in one single month. That’s when my husband and I started talking seriously about moving to Colorado, so I made the leap and switched all of my marketing over from Tennessee to Colorado — not knowing if what worked there would work in a brand new market, or if I’d been riding pure luck the whole time.

Moving My Photography Business Across the Country (and Proving It Wasn’t Luck)

In March 2021, I started booking flights to Colorado and building out my portfolio for the new market. That same month, I booked my first Colorado wedding and elopement. In June 2021, we officially moved — and I never once had to consider going back to nursing, because my business took off just as fast in a brand new state as it had in Tennessee. That was the proof I needed that this wasn’t luck, or a fluke, or a saturated-market exception. It was foundational.

The Five-Figure Month That Started My Mentoring Journey

In August 2021, I hit my first five-figure month (I actually wrote this down in an accomplishments tracker I still use today, and I’ll link that for you in the show notes if you want to start one yourself). Just one month later, in September 2021, I had a $20,000+ cash month, with over $40,000 in total value booked.

That kind of growth is what led to November 2021, when I started mentoring photographers for the very first time — completely unplanned. Photographers started asking, “Claire, what are you doing?” and wanting me to teach them. My husband had actually told me months earlier that he could picture me one day running a studio and teaching other photographers, hosting retreats. He wasn’t far off — I don’t have the studio, but I’m in a virtual room with photographers almost every single week now, and it’s become one of the most meaningful parts of what I do.

From $1,500 Weddings to $6,500 Weddings: How My Pricing Evolved

By December 2021, I was booking $6,500 weddings — up from $1,500 to $2,000 weddings just a year and a half earlier in May 2020. That’s when I really started scaling, testing out prints and albums for the first time, and I made $2,000 in profit the very first time I launched an album offering, which felt almost as significant to me as my old monthly nursing paycheck.

Throughout 2021, I was doing one-on-one mentor sessions on the side, charging about $150 an hour at first because I honestly wasn’t sure if what worked for me would work for anyone else. But as more and more photographers came through those calls asking the exact same questions, I started to see a pattern — and that pattern became the foundation for everything I teach today.

Launching the Podcast and Building Book It

In early 2022, my husband and I bought our first home in Colorado, and in March 2022, I started planning to launch this very podcast. I knew I had things to say that needed to reach more photographers, and even though I had no idea how to market to an audience of photographers at the time, I knew I loved to talk (or as I say, “yap”), so a podcast just made sense. As more photographers found me through the show and asked me to teach everything I’d done, I began planning the very first launch of Book It in 2022 — all while running one of the busiest years of my actual wedding photography business, complete with an associate team.

From 2022 to now, watching my photography business’ continued growth, booking $10k-$15k around the world, and seeing photographers go through the same foundation — the one I built completely by accident — and become sought after themselves has been the most rewarding part of this entire journey.

What “Sought After” Actually Means

Here’s the thing I want you to really sit with: being sought after isn’t about being the most talented or having the flashiest portfolio. It’s a couple arriving at your inquiry form already halfway sold. It’s showing up to a discovery call and not feeling like you’re auditioning — just confirming what they already feel about you. It’s sending your pricing guide and getting a yes without a single follow-up question. None of that happens by accident. It happens because of your messaging — what your business is actually saying about you before a client ever speaks to you directly.

What I built without even realizing it at the time wasn’t just strategy. It was a business rooted in connection, intentionality, and serving — the same three pillars I teach inside my coaching programs today. My captions, my inquiry replies, my website copy — it was all doing the selling before I ever said a word. That’s what I mean when I talk about becoming sought after, and it’s exactly what I’ve watched change photographer after photographer’s business for the last four-plus years.

Nicole’s Story: $9,000 Booked in 3 Days After Changing Her Messaging (Not Her Pricing, Not Her Posting)

I want to tell you about one of my students, Nicole, because her story is proof of what a messaging shift alone can do. Her inbox had been quiet for three years. The only inquiries she’d get were referrals, and she genuinely believed the problem was her visibility or her reach. We didn’t touch her posting schedule. We didn’t touch her pricing. We changed her messaging — the actual words her business was saying before a couple ever spoke with her.

Just two weeks into joining Book It, Nicole booked $9,000 in three days, with two couples ready to book almost immediately. One bride was ready to say yes just five minutes into the discovery call. She messaged me afterward asking what kind of magic I’d put into the program. It wasn’t magic. It was messaging.

Introducing “Booked Before the Call”: My Live Workshop on July 22nd

This is exactly what I’m teaching, live, just once this year, in a workshop I’m calling Booked Before the Call — because that’s the whole goal: getting a couple to already feel booked with you before they ever get on the phone.

Inside the live workshop, I’m walking you through:

  • The real reason couples choose someone else — and it has nothing to do with your talent, your portfolio, or your prices
  • The specific positioning shifts that make you the obvious choice before a couple ever gets on a call, so you stop competing with the 47 other photographer tabs they have open
  • One messaging change to make at each stage of your marketing funnel, turning “just looking” into “we have to book her”
  • How the right words alone build enough value that your price becomes almost beside the point

If you’re listening before July 22nd, 2026, there’s a live Q&A at the end where I’ll be choosing one photographer’s website to audit live on the call — you’ll need to attend live for that one. And if you’re catching this after the fact, don’t worry — I’ll always have the most current version of the workshop or registration linked for you in the show notes and description.

This workshop is for you if your inbox feels quiet or unpredictable, if you’re getting ghosted after sending your pricing, if you know you’re ready to raise your prices but you’re nervous because your inquiries aren’t consistent yet, or if you’re doing everything you think you’re “supposed” to do — posting, showing up, tweaking your website — and you still feel invisible.

Key Takeaways from this Episode:

  • Going full-time doesn’t require a five-year plan — I replaced my nursing income in just three months with zero strategy in place at the start
  • A business can transfer across markets if it’s built on real foundations rather than luck, location, or timing
  • Pricing can climb dramatically in a short window — While my own pricing went from $1,500 weddings to $6,500 weddings in under two years, my students raise their pricing by $500-$2000 PER PACKAGE during their 3 months of Book It
  • Messaging, not visibility or pricing, is often the real bottleneck — Nicole’s $9,000-in-3-days result came from changing her words, not her posting schedule or her rates
  • Being “sought after” is a byproduct of connection, intentionality, and service — not talent alone or a bigger portfolio

What’s Covered in this Episode:

  • My full, in-depth origin story — from pediatric trauma nursing to going full-time in 3 months
  • The exact timeline of my first year in business, including my first destination wedding and my first eight-weddings-in-a-month
  • What it took to move my business across the country and prove it wasn’t a fluke
  • How my pricing evolved from $1,500 weddings to $6,500 weddings
  • How I accidentally started mentoring photographers and eventually launched this podcast and Book It
  • What “sought after” really means and why it comes down to messaging
  • Nicole’s story of booking $9,000 in three days after a messaging shift alone
  • Full details on my live workshop, Booked Before the Call, happening July 22nd, 2026

the photography business coach who still shoots weddings...

shocking i know!!!!

My photography business wasn't always the plan. If you know anything about how tough nursing school is, you don't just put yourself through that hard work for 2+ years to then quit. But that's exactly what happened for me. I loved pediatric trauma nursing in a lot of ways but it also left me feeling so empty.

Maybe you can resonate with that - loving your career but it also leaving you empty.
I knew something had to change so I began pursuing this passion for photography without any real plan.

Within 3 months, I was able to pursue my photography career fully and I haven't looked back once. In my first full time year, I made over 100K. In my second year and beyond, I've brought in multi six figures. Let me be clear in saying that I don't tell you this to brag. In fact, I hate money talk (shivers).

I do tell you this because if I believe anything to be true, it's that you can find this same success too. Since 2022, I have packaged up all of my tried and true knowledge into education, mentorship, podcast episodes, resources, freebies, and so much more because I care about you and your business. I want to help you quit that career that's leaving you empty and grow your business with bookings from premium clients.

OR if you're finding yourself losing the love for your photography business (I've been there when I booked 30+ weddings), I want to help you scale so that never happens again.

There's something here for you, so stick around and come say hey on Instagram (@itsclairehunt) while you're at it.
